The Benefits of Babywearing

Intuition, common sense, and modern science have all demonstrated the marvelous benefits of babywearing.  Research has indicated specific advantages that occur when a baby is worn on the body of a loving caregiver, here is a sampling of what has been documented…

The Womb Outside the Womb

Many prominent doctors and researchers, including Dr. Harvey Karp (The Happiest Baby on the Block) and Dr. William Sears discuss the benefits of recreating a womb-like atmosphere for newborns.  By wearing your baby you are providing an environment which helps to calm and organize your baby.  Your baby moves with you as you move, can hear your heartbeat, hear your voice, and feel the heat of your body – all calming reminders of the womb.  Research also indicates that babywearing can actually facilitate hormonal regulation in the infant helping them to sleep at night and wake during the day.  Babywearing helps to regulate behavior and motor activity, while facilitating optimal emotional, intellectual, and physiological development.

Bonding

Babywearing speeds up and fosters bonding.  Wearing your baby actually stimulates the release of bonding or mothering hormones.  This can be especially important for parents and babies who are temporally separated or have had a difficult start.  Parents who wear their babies learn to read and respond to their baby’s cues more easily, thus promoting a sense of competence and confidence.

Reduced Crying & Colic

Babies who are worn cry and fuss less, they are more content, making for happier families.  This is due to the fact that babywearing helps regulate an infants vestibular system (the system that allows us to balance), vestibular stimulation such as walking, rocking, and swinging have long been used to calm babies.  Again, taking babies back to their womb like experience, babywearing allows babies to feel safe and secure thus reducing crying.  Sometimes, despite what you do, babies cry – wearing your baby tells them I will not leave you alone, I am here.

Growth & Development

Babies who cry and fuss less have more energy to put into being content and alert, allowing them to optimally interact with their environment and learn.  Babies who are worn get to experience first hand the world of their parents; constantly learning about life and their world.  This facilitates speech, intellectual, and motor development.  Babies who are attachment-parented actually tend to have advanced motor development perhaps because of the benefit attachment has on the nervous system and also because they have extra energy due to fussing less.  Babywearing also fosters physical growth, likely due to the promotion of hormones and enzymes that facilitate growth and because they are crying and fussing less allowing more energy to go into growing! Not to mention, leading experts are warning of the ill effects of babies being left in bucket carseats for extended periods of time, slings are the perfect answer for busy parents.

Mother Wellness

Postpartum depression is also less common in mothers who wear their babies, likely due to the hormonal link as well as the fact that babies tend to cry and fuss less when worn.

Family Wellness

Babywearing can help foster sibling harmony, as parents can have their hands free allowing them to interact more easily with their other children.

Behaviour

Research has consistently shown that babies and children who are well attached/connected tend to be more cooperative, sensitive, positive, secure, settled, trusting, confident, flexible, affectionate, empathetic, and sociable, share more easily and love to learn.
